If I knew what you were talking about, I would comment - as it is, I just about manage to turn my PC on and find my way around the existing site and the Web in general. There seem to be plenty of IT proficient members in the Club who know what they are doing, so I will rely on them to make the right decisions. As long as I can keep in touch with other Club members, anything you decide will be fine by me.

I echo robbo5's comments, if it is seen as an improvement by the younger IT proficient members of the group then I will support the idea. Mind you, I may need to be guided (slowly) through any new gegistration procedure!!

If the change make things easier to work with be it moderator level and/or numpty level (my level) then I do not see any problems with the change, however, if it was change for change sake then best stick to what people know, reading the previous post it would seem that its a good thing.

This wouldn't be change just because we fancy something different. Although I believe in progress I also don't see the point of changing something that does it's job as wanted (I mean I haven't changed my hairstyle in 10+ years ) but ProBoards is limited in quite a few ways that make things awkward and doesn't do it's job as we want.

Pretty much the same as everyone else, if the moderators think its for the best then its OK with me as I'm not very computer literate anyway (hence the lack of an avatar)

Yes please upgrade.
Whilst we probably wouldn't go to my forum software of choice (vBulletin) because it is expensive to buy, there are plenty of free forums (eg phpBB) that are far more powerful than ProBoards, and the fact that the posts would be kept on the register's own server would be to our advantage.

It seems to me that you are planning to change the software that supports the Forum rather than generate (yet) another Forum. Reading through the thread, I am hard pressed to identify any benefits that will accrue to the humble users. Indeed it seems that any change will allow the “moderators” to more easily mess around with the posts of us humble users. This does not generate any huge excitement for me. In the absents of any benefits for me, I am afraid I can only view this as the techies playing with mud for their own amusement.
Perhaps the “moderators” could make this seemingly pointless change more palatable my automatically moving users’ registration details from one form of forum software to the new, better censoring, software. I am sure this will be reported as a technical challenge that would be beyond the capability of NASA but suspect it is merely too tedious for the techies to contemplate.
I am a reasonable man so will be happy to change my views if one (or more) of the “moderators” comes up with a cogent post of how this new software will make owning an MGF even more fun or morph the MGF Register into the well managed Saga of the MG community.

It's not a technical challenge to move the users data...
It's physically impossible.
Proboards will not let you, you can offer them money, first born children or the secret to immortality and they will not budge. Nothing on this board belongs to you or I or the Register, it's all ProBoards to do what they want with.

At the end of the day all we have to do as users is to re-register - how big a job is that ? ......... gotta be at least 2 minutes out of your lifetime by sticking an e mail addy and your name in an input box

If you change the forum software and/or host then I will reregister. Just been the same way on another hobby forum.
However - why would proboard bother to keep the existing posts once they spot that we have all gone? What happens to the "archive" of info? Is there an archive of info? I guess I've never bothered to do a search on here as I don't think of it as a knowledge base, more a contact forum for events and meets.

Re “It's not a technical challenge to move the users data...

Well I can see the details of the member and can “cut&paste” into Excel or Access. From there surely a simple job to automate the setup of these users on the new software. Not physically impossible – just tedious. I guess it depends on whether you see the membership as there to indulge your techie interests or you are here to serve the membership!
I confess I worry about Pro boards “owning” our details. I used my home email when setting up by account rather than the office one with its Rottweiler junk filter. For the first time in 10 years on my home email address I have starter receiving junk mail with a lot of posts in German offering duff investment advise together with some pharmaceutical suppliers. Are Proboards selling email addresses to this scum?

Can you see their passwords?
Sure I could add everyone in manually and make up a random password for them and then get them to use the password recovery system on the new software to send them their password and then get them to log in and change their password...
But wouldn't it be just as easy for them to enter their user name and password in the new software anyway?
