Very simple two question poll...
Would you be willing to sign up on a new forum if it took us away from ProBoards and gave us full control over our own forum allowing customisation and more flexibility in the software?
This one would be locked keeping all the past posts preserved and redirection to the new forum would be posted in every section so people would know exactly where to go for the new forum.

I am doing the same with my local MG clubs forum, I am doing it because it will give the club ownership of all the data and control over the adverts (if any) that are shown. It also allows the forum to be more closely integrated with the clubs website.

In two minds with this one Although a new forum with all the extras would bring us up to date with what most people are using these days, the current forum holds alot of information. I know it can be locked and used as an archive, but how many people would actually bother. They would just ask again on the new forum. Also, the problem with people re-registering, as this thread will hopefully reflect once more have voted, could be seen in both ways. If those registered now are still enthusiastic about the forum, it's not a great thing to enter their user name and password on a new forum. If people can't be bothered with this small step, then I can't really see they are that enthusiastic at all. But this depends on whether people feel there is a need for a new forum in the first place. Perhaps we should have had a poll for that first. At the end of the day, if it's just because we're worried about how many people will re-register, I think that doesn't really matter. After all, we're not running a forum to compete with others on registration numbers. Also, are people really that bothered about how many posts anyone has made. I'm not sure if the new forum would have the ability to adjust the number of postings each registered member has made, but the current forum moderators could always carry that across manually. Open for further discussion... Rich.

Seems quite reasonable if it gives the club more control over the site.

Re-registration on a new forum can be made as painless as possible, Rich, and the ability to adjust things like that would be taken into consideration when choosing one.
This is more to gauge people's interest in moving away from this system, and as Chris said it gives us control over the data which in this day and age I think everyone is wary about, the complete lack of adverts we'd have on the new system and the more flexibility to the forum software.
You're quite right, Rich, we're not competing for numbers but we want the forum we have to be user-friendly for the end users and the admins.
On a IT level I've heard people complain about the ProBoard system, but never anyone praise it.

- No adverts unless we want them.
- Control of our own data, to be backed up on our terms and no reliance on a 3rd party who may suddenly decide to sell it off or stop the forum access with no prior warning (The Provider may at its sole discretion remove any message board for any reason).
- The ability for integration with the MGF Register Website.
- The ability customise the software to fit with anything we desired to add.
To be fair, other than that there is very little you would see or know about as different as an end user. From a technical/admin viewpoint though it opens up a whole range of possibilities for future additions or customisations. From the moderators viewpoint it would make it possible to tidy threads up if they needed to be without having to delete whole posts/threads, threads could be merged if duplicates were being posted to keep relevant things together, and similarly ones could be split if they were getting off topic. ProBoards is ok at what it does, but it doesn't do a lot and it can cause frustrations amongst users and staff with it's restrictive, and somewhat archaic system. Other than that I can't really say that anything new will do anything else that this doesn't. Vote as you will.

If we do move away from ProBoards to another setup then yes I'll register. However, I'm a great believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it". This forum costs nothing and does all that we want of it, so why move away from it?

Yes, I would register. Good to keep all this info archived but we shouldn't fear change!! Software that allows better customisation would be good. I'm sure those with 'monster' post counts will soon ratch up mega postings in no time!!
