Lovely John P sent me details for this a while ago - I've never been abroad and I'm changing this by joining Adrian on the Kempenrit run in August. Terrified and excited! Angouleme does really sound perfect as I can think of nothing nicer than doing what you have planned with such lovely people as John and Lynn (think they're the only people booked that we've met!) - but at the moment finances are rather stretched as I've lost some work recently.... Would it still be possible to book in April if finances looked agreeable, or would that be cutting it fine? And could someone kindly pm me with some idea of overall cost for doing this, if it were possible? TIA!

Andie
Glad to see you are breaking your Euro Virginity at last.
It would be nice to see you in Angouleme basking in the hot sunshine ane putting the French local ladies in the shade but I understand fiscal constraints.
See how you feel about it in April, may still get in to the same hotel. I'll did out cocts at home later this evening.

Paula, have you got a copy of the Natter pdf ?
Book the hotel tomorrow - it can be cancelled right up to 1700 on day of arrival if you change your mind.
Lyn & I will go over on the Thursday and plan a stop over somewhere on the way and arrive at Angouleme on Friday for 4 nights. Leave to drive home on the Tuesday. Gives us Saturday to visit Cognac for lunch by the river and some Brandy tasting; Sunday to bake in the sun while watching historic car racing between eating & drinking; Monday to be a tourist; Tuesday to get to the ferry.
4 nights hotel €193 + food + drink (if you do).
Caen to Angouleme is less than 300 miles with ferry from Portsmouth. You can get a normal ferry, have afternoon tea outside the cathedral in Le Mans and stopover on the Loire somewhere like Tours or Samour or Amboise. May be able to include the Son et Lumiere in Amboise Castle depending on dates.
Calais to Angouleme is about 450 miles.
If time is tight then straight from ferry to Angouleme is easily done, saves a night hotel and food but misses out on the relaxation. Equally, could leave on the Monday morning rather than stop until the Tuesday. 300 miles is not far - I'll be doing that for the next fpower Sunday lunch run.
If you didn't get the Natter pdf file send your email addy to me at jponting At globalnet DOT co DOT uk.

April may be pushing it a bit - the area is pretty heavily booked already - try the Ibis and as John says you can always cancel with no penalty - costs shouldn't be too high ferry - hotels on the way down and way back - depends how long you stay. We are booked for four nights at the Ibis from the Thursday to Sunday. Race day is the sunday and we'll be out with the Effers on the saturday with the natter in the evening. The essence of this one is to get yourself there and back as suits you but to meet up for a "natter" at the weekend. Last year's Monaco trip was great fun and we took twelve days over that one. There's a website with some details at www.mgcars.org.uk/runnymede-mgoc/mgpitfiles/ramparts/angouleme06.htmand hopefully john has sent you the pdf already. Incidentally if you find the hotels are all booked there MAY be a fallback option of B&B with an Effer who lives locally. Incidentally the 2005 Natter page can be found here and if you find the link you can find some more photos of that trip ! www.mgcars.org.uk/runnymede-mgoc/mgpitfiles/sef/monaco05.htm

...or if time (and money ;D) constraints don't apply, why not spend some quality time on a beach on the west coast for a few days on the way down, like wot we're doin'. (And Portsmouth - Caen is just ideal, always use it for Le Mans and the Natter).

Now that work seems to have sorted itself out and they are going to let me come back (although still on the waiting list for the operations) I have booked my hotel, the Ibis Nord at Angouleme for three nights (Friday to Sunday).
If anybody wants to hitch a lift down and back, let me know.
Latest list
John & Lyn - booked Mike & Jan - booked Tim & Liz - booked Neil - booked David & Barbara Arthur & Barbara (could get confusing ) Adrian - booked

Andie,
Book hotel NOW and repent LATER.
Plan a quick raid - Friday morning ferry from Poole or Portsmouth, drive straight to Angouleme for dinner on Friday night, Saturday visit Cognac, Sunday site see Anglouleme and racing, Monday straight to ferry and home by late evening.
Ferry depends on the route, speed and time; hotel IBIS 3 nights @ €44 (approx £30 per night); petrol for 700 miles including tripping.

It's a possibility she may come, but it would have to depend on getting time off work, she has said if anybody wants to come with me, they are welcome.

Would she be so magnanimous is it was AndieB? I'm fairly sure Lyn would soon get time of work if I suggested taking Andie.
