Not MG related but opinion sought. Son in law takes his Focus RS into garage to have it stage 2 modified after they have done the work they put it on the rolling road and the Turbo has blown up. Garage has said that it is not their fault, so he has to pay for new Turbo!!!!! Turbo was brand new only fitted approx one month before going into this garage.. I do not think that he is liable for the damage but......

My initial thoughts here....
1. Did this Garage fit the turbo in the first place? 2. Does the "Stage 2 modification" invalidate the warranty on the Turbo? If so, point 1 is irrelevant. 3. Does the "Stage 2 modification" place a higher load / strain on the Turbo?
It looks to me like you son in tinkering (nothing wrong with that!) but has got burned... only hope is proving a manufacturing fault on the turbo, or incorrect fitting by the garage.

His Turbo blew one cold wet day (engine even colder and heavy right foot!!) so garage 1 fitted new Turbo, however, the car required retuning/mapping as the replacement Turbo had a bigger output, they could not carry out the tuning so he phoned garage number 2 who (supposedly) specialize in tuning cars. thats when he decided to go whole hog and get rest of engine tuned. The Stage 2 tuning meant that they had to remove the Turbo and "do stuff"(not sure what!!!) before replacing then retest on rolling road. thats when the Turbo was "found" to be not working!!! Sorry for the long posting....

Oh incidentally, all parties involved are denying responsibility and want him to pay for a new one...without giving any reason for the Turbo failure.

Sorry for the long posting.... The 'stuff' they did to the turbo probably consisted of exchanging the journal bearings and thrust plate for bits capable of bearing higher loads. The turbo cartridge needs to be completely dismantled to replace them and then needs to be rebalanced perfectly or it WILL blow up. These things spool up to like 25000 rpm so if they're even slightly out of balance the bearings can give very quickly under the load. Once they go you can pretty much kiss your turbine shaft and/or compressor wheel goodbye. They also need to be reinstalled back onto the car very carefully. The engine needs to be cranked over to ensure the bearings in the turbo are wet before it is spooled up for the first time. Unfortunately if the garage don't take the time to do it properly there are often problems, and as most people aren't turbo specialists they usually aren't in a position to argue the facts. It's harsh but i've seen it happen more than once. I hope you have some luck and get it sorted. Marty

Brand New Turbo fitted (at son in laws) expense, however, garage sending old one off to independant expert to assess failure depending on outcome will decide on what course of action follows.
