My MGF has recently started to smell of hot coolant after and during journeys (although this isnt the case 100% of the time), i have no warning lights and the temp gauge is not reading as hot (gradually warms up to just below half way and sits there as it would do normally). There is no indication of HGF, both coolant and oil look perfect and there doesn't appear to be any leaks anywhere. Could this be a thermostat issue? Any help would be appreciated.

if in doubt, get it checked over - you could prevent a HGF if you do so early enough!! Whereabouts are you??

If you think you can smell coolant then you must have a leak. Is the coolant reservoir topped up to the correct level? When was the cap changed?

not sure when the cap was changed, but the dimple isnt offset and doesnt appear to be faulty. Coolant level is correct, it just smells extremely hot.

Are you sure its a coolant smell? check your exhaust in case you have something on it, something may have come off of the road?

Something that can 'smell hot' without fluid loss is if your low speed fan resistors are on it's/their way out. Sometimes windscreen washer fluid can smell disconcertingly like coolant but the worst possible cause would be even a small leak from the heater matrix, even a tiny amount smells a lot. Good luck
