I recently bought a sparkling red VVC with 30k on the clock and a FSH. I've only had the car for 4 days and it's been great but i'm worried the head might have gone already! It struggled starting first time yesterday and i've noticed what looks like a small amount of water coming out of the exhaust and leaving black marks on the bottom of the bodywork.
It's been running fine since but i'm worried it might be early signs of HGF. Is there any way i can tell?

Engines can produce quite a bit of condensation in exhaust system at start up, I wouldn't be too worried at this point but keep an eye on the level of the coolant.

We've just come back from a three-week touring holiday around europe - even in mid-30s ambient air temperatures, the exhaust was still consdensing overnight and takes a little while to burn off in the morning. Struggling starting
The key to your question is whether the coolant level is stable or not - if it is, then all is likely to be well. But if not, then it must be going somewhere, and you should find out where - but don't automatically assume HGF - it could just as easily be a leak from one of the many flexible/rigid pipes, joints etc in the coooling system.
Welcome to the paranoid world of the F's cooling system......but don't let it get you down as the car is superb fun! And even if it is HGF, once it has been fixed properly once, then in most cases it doesn't seem to recur....

I would say it's just condensation, even in the warm climate of oz I still get it. Keep an eye as everyone sugests on the coolant level and just enjoy..

Oh and one might add that at 30k, if it is struggling to start normally, presumably, taking longer to catch and fiore than normal, then you might want to look at the condition of the plug leads and coils.

Cheers for that fellers, it's a comfort to know it's not defo a HGF. I'll keep an eye on the coolant level and check out the plugs and coils. Nice one!
