it is part of the head gasket and is responsible for 80% of HGFs and the L/R gasket is as bad in this area as the MG one What is this fire ring?

Well, if you have a look at the gasket, there are 4 round openings for the cillinders, and the edge of those openings have an extra ring... the fire rings. Maybe the following image make it a bit clearer. hope this makes some sense

so how would one make it stronger as 80% of hgf are at the fire ring ( quote sabre heads) Find that hard to believe!!.. I would say 80% of HGF's are failure of the gasket sealant causing cross contamination, ie the Dipstick full of mayo type failure!..

Fire ring failure would depend on the hardness of the head, and the liner height proud of the cylinder block It's not normally a problem, most seem to be failures of the polymer bead, but there again, who knows
