Phew!!! Back to business My wipers packed up today in torrential rain just when I was in a hurry. After struggling home, I find the motor part is full of water. Looks like it's been there for months, as the rust locked the armature against the permanent magnets, and one of the brush holders had corroded and dropped off My question is, and I have seen Dieter's site on wipers, is the wiper motor generic to MG-R. Ie, will a 200/400 motor fit? I'm going to give it a go and repair it, drill drainage holes etc, but a new motor seems the best bet at the moment. Is it worth getting new, or will I be back in the same boat if I get a used one?

Had the same problem a few weeks back on one of the F`s and was advised by Andy Peters that this is a well documented problem so for that reason I opted for the repair rarher than buying second hand on the better the devil you know theory. Took it apart & after cleaning it up & drying it out b4 assembly I coated the o ring with silicone sealant.
So far so good but time will tell

Had to buy a new one, amazingly the X-Part dealer had one in stock - £135. Three holes drilled in the new magnet casing, one for lubrication, and one hole in the gearbox as the "official" drain is in the wrong place. The old one is repairable, but will take some doing as one of the brush holders had corroded off. If successful, I'll keep it as s/e stock for our local www.swmgf.org.uk group in case anyone else has wiper motor trouble. It seems MG-R 200/400 wiper motors are out of stock with big demand in this weather. They have different part numbers, but the motor part is identical. The gearbox mounting plates differentiate them. It turns out the motor assy is made by Trico just up the road in Pontypool

Hi Dieter.
No idea how the water got in. My car is 5 years old!! It may be expansion and contraction of the interior volume of the motor casing drawing in moisture on cooling. The "O" ring was intact, in fact from outside it all looked like new. Fixing a brush holder back on is do-able, but I needed working wipers in the weather we have here at the moment.
Yes, I have pics, but too late now, and I will be back late tomorrow. Monday am I'll post a link to some pics of the "tide mark" in the gearbox, the brush holder, and the drainage holes in the new wiper assy.
Regards, Jerry
