I Have just been quoted £515 + £65 if water pump requires replacement for a 4th annual service @ a former MG Rover garage (Viking Motors Southampton) does anyone think this is reasonable ? or should I keep searching ! VMT

It depends on what model you have but that is about right for an Ex-dealer servicing a TF. The 4year service is a big one that includes a Cambelt change and there's two belts on the VVC. They will check the waterpump at the time that the belt's removed. They will also check the Cambelt tensioner at the same time which may add a further cost if necessary. You will find better quotes at specialist garages and even better at the likes of Nationwide Autocentres etc but be cautious of these large Kwik-fit type garages.

Here at 'British Legends' we would charge £450 including the waterpump and tensioner on a VVC for the 4yr , 60k service with Cambelts.

Pays your money and takes your chance, Always better though to have someone take care of your vehicle who has reliability, pride and a thorough knowledge in what they do, it is hard to gain a good reputation and harder to keep, so its good to know a company like BRITISH LEGENDS exist for us...

Get the tensioner done anyway.... its only £25 and if it goes, then your cambelt becomes as useful as a chocolate fireguard!
£65 for waterpump replacement is shocking....... its 5 bolts (no hard ones), and just comes straight off whilst the cambelt etc. are off the car.
Since the MG/Rover price for the part is about £30, an additional £30 for a 10 minute job is taking the p*ss, frankly.

Try Patrick Warner, at Sterling Automotive in Eastbourne 01323 438754. I see you are quoting a garage in Southampton, so I guess that is within your area. Patrick's a long standing MGF enthusiast and owner, he's also a sponsor of MGFest (like Steve Tyler, B&G's, Mike Satur and the MGF Centre of course).

Just a quickie. Have I missed something? A belt kit, 2 belts and tensioner costs around 55 quid and takes around 3 hours, I know I've done probably a dozen so far (three of my own vehicles included) Where does the rest of the money go?

Over here the big service costs about AU$500 at my non authorized specialist. HG replacement with water pump, belts approx AU$1500, but a friend went to another MG specialist and got charged double and on the 14km run home it went again, the workshop saying it was the gasket failing nothing to do with his work!!!!!. Shop around and deal with recommendations only.
