A note just in the chance that it may save someone a lot of pain. The problem was on my 1.8 P Reg was that intermittently I would turn the key to start , the ignition light goes out, you hear a faint click but the starter motor would not turn, (wouldn’t bump start either ) To cut a long story short the problem was a spade connector which sit on the starter solenoid underneath the main power cable ( you can feel it with your hand more than you can see it) anyway the cause of the problem is that with the constant engine heat the spade connector becomes soft and intermittently losses contact. To rectify Disconnect the battery ( as your will get sparks all over the place when your spanner touches the main power cable) and with pliers crimp the spade connector. I found that I couldn’t pull the spade off the connector I think there maybe a hook link to spot it vibrating off anyway once crimped no more problems Hope this help some other poor sole

same story for the alternator. The alternator has even more problems with that, because of the exhaust manifold is sitting right beside it.

Steve, you've just described the way KKE embarassed me today at the MGoT day! Although it did bump-start... I shall be checking it out tomorrow, thanks for the tip!
