Hi guys, Not a happy chappie at the moment. I was on the way to the local MGOC meeting last night and suddenly clouds of steam bellowed from the boot vents... Not sure what it is yet, as I lost no power and the oil & water temperature were fine too. I've checked the oil and it's normal. So not sure if it's the dreaded HGF. All this, just after the brake incident. Is someone trying to tell me something? Rich.

I'd start by changing the expansion tank cap as the relief valve in it may have failed. Other then that it a case of checking for leaks and puddles under the car.
If the change of cap doesn't sort it then the next step would be to get a pressure test done down the local garage. (hence why I mentioned at the AGM that we are looking into getting a pressure test kit for the 'region' as I think it would be very usefull and pay for itself pretty quickly).

Hope it's not HGF Rich, Had it previously on my zr, I agree with whats been said, cap, sounds like escaping from coolant.I had mine pressure tested 3 times by garage who assured me all was ok,but they wrong as was the early stages and cos i kept topping up coolant prevented it for quite some time.Hopefully its the cap!
p.s. I have some photos to send, use them for the site if you want.

Thanks for the support guys. Unfortunately, it was HGF. It's now in at Clifton-Lane who have agreed to do a special deal for me. It's going to have the new head gasket fitted too so I'll have far more confidence. Also, the head will be skimmed by default, so it should be alot better when I get it back, bearing in mind it's 15 miles off 98K!
Stuart, I would be most interested in the pics. Please send 'em! Might be great for the website...

Daved,
The Northants MGOC meeting - Nothing to do with MGF Register. It's just that Adrian and I are in that club too.
Adrian,
First that I know of, but I bought the car at 62K and had a timing belt failure at 76K so the head was stripped then and 10 valves replaced! Didn't have the new multi-layer gasket available then so had to go with the old 'revised' one.

Update...
Went to visit 'the patient in hospital' this afternoon. Slight delay as apparently the valves have to be removed from a VVC head before skimming so it wasn't completed today as planned. That does give the advantage that the valve seats will be cleaned and the valves reseated though. All looking good for picking up Wednesday. The gasket had blown in just one small spot but that's enough! No other damage done. It's also giving me the chance to clean up my 'special' air filter system before it's all reassembled. Taking a trip to Trident Racing Supplies at Silverstone Circuit tomorrow to get some new flexible ducting.

Coming back tomorrow (Thursday) if all goes well. A couple of bits were spotted on re-assembly, including some potting on the aluminium inlet manifold that they think has been there for a while and may have caused a slight drop in the vauccum pressure. It's being welded and skimmed by the same people who skimmed the head and they are giving it a general clean-up so flow should be slightly improved too. The refurbished air filter is in and looking a bit tidier than before. Finally, the hydrogas levels are being adjusted as I think they were a little low. They're setting it to Trophy spec. so it won't be too high!
Gotta run it in gently for the best results but all in all it should be better than it ever was. Can't wait!
Rich ;D

Great news Rich. I'll be very interested to hear what you think of the Trophy suspension set up.

It can only be more comfortable than it was. It was too low and meant that even the lowest road humps had to be negotiated slowly and with extreme care. But I didn't want it looking like a 4x4 either! Just hope I might have the clearance to fit my splitter without ripping it off on my driveway...

Have you got the Baby back then Rich? What's it like? A new car. Does it remind you of the first time you ever drove a MGF?
