My mgf is causing me concern and confusion, been in and out of various garages and still no cure................Gets hot quickly,by this i mean oil temp rises to 130 deg with fast driving or distance according to guage but i don't need a guage to tell me as at gets pretty damn hot in the drivers seat well before that registers.had oil temp and pressure switches changed,5yr service, plugs, leads, dis cap, coolant replaced. No sign of water leaks or contamination in oil or water. Intermittant problem is that on occasion it has got hot and stalled on me after hard acceleration and only just managed to get home 3 times over last month.next day is always fine.It has just done it again today so will see what happens in the morning. Any ideas? I am considering replacing cat and exhaust system as has been suggested as a cause and want to replace anyway, however im worried i have a serious engine problem?

Stuart,
I spoke to Roger Parker today about the problems you're having and he reckons it sounds like a cooling problem too, probably concentrated near the front. I can also confirm that it can have that effect as mine did the same thing on a long run back from Abingdon on a hot day. The car was fine, but my radiator is not in the best of condition so wasn't doing a brilliant job of cooling the coolant! I turned on the heater to full heat (the roof was down so I didn't cook) and it brought it down to normal level. Perhaps you could try that out.
If all else fails, Roger will be at Brit-Cars and he's happy to have a look for you.
Rich.

Exactly the same problem on a run to the west country. New rad and the system bled in all bleed points, not just the one that was found first. Result.

If you do need a rad, get the ali TF one - about £125 from Mike Satur and while your at it check the underfloor cooling pipes (assuming you haven't already) if they look like they are on their last legs I can recommend the stainless steel ones from MS.

Thanks guys to all your replies. The radiator could be the culprit then, strange thing is coolant doesn't seem to get hot but oil temp does, wouldn't it be the other way round and going in the red if rad was duff?? The back of my seat gets very hot and boot area hot to touch. cheers

Does the engine bay fan come on (offside intake) ? if the bay is getting as hot as you describe the fan should continue cooling even after you have switched the engine off and be able to hear that fan fairly easy. Also have you upgraded the 15 Amp fuse to 20 Amps in the under bonnet fuse box ?

I'm interested to know why you ask about the fuse but no not touched it? I have continued to fit mods to my car including new exhaust system, and on short runs car has been fine, however on a the way back from mgf centre wed it decided to conk out on me,oil temp this time only reached about 125 and i was pulling around 4500 revs on a5 then just started to kangaroo on me and pulled over.I let her cool down for 1/2 hr restarted and drove home though kept it to 3000 around 70mph and was fine but drivers seat very hot but water and oil temp seem normal.Don't understand why i'm getting hot and it's conking out on me when guages ok and no loss of water/oil?

If its the oil temp I think it's a simple fix of a resister to be added to the oil temp gauge it is not the oil getting to hot but an electrical problem. My 2001 F had the same problem whilst my VVC takes an age or some 15km before it starts to move.

Thanks, I don't think it's a water problem as sits just under half way on guage and when hot moves a touch and you can hear fan come on. It's the oil temp which rises and yes guage could be no good but then why does oil temp rising coincide with kangaroo petrol and stopping me? Garage done 5yr service and coolant flush, diagnostics check showed vacum error but pipe cleaned and error deleted gave me the o.k. They seem to think it's o.k. I can't seem to get it to do it when they have it,if i go out and put my foot down it will do it......... Don't want to bugger up my engine??

To quote Roger Parker...
As I've said before, mine is the same and I know mine is definitely the radiator! My water temperature sits just under the half way mark all the time once it has warmed up properly, but the oil temperature guage changes drastically with different driving conditions. Have a word with Roger tomorrow at the Brit-Cars rally... he's expecting you!
Rich.
