I read all these things about Performanc echips for my tf and they say " only mins to fit these" do they actually work is it worth trying or is it a bit of a risk

If you're talking about the "power resistor" e-bay items, going for a couple of quid - no they don't work, yes they are a risk.
Alledgedly you can't "chip" an f/tf in the normal manner, but there has been a few people reporting reasonable gains from full on remapping - usually resulting in them being shotdown by others who refuse to believe their claims? I have no opinion either way.
Upshot - no, if it's a "fit it yourself in less time than it takes to boil the kettle" job, forget it.

eBay 50p resistor = fools the engine management system into thinking the air temp is colder than it is, resulting in more fuel being injected and more power. Sadly also bore wash ultimately and a big BANG! Don't go there.

Piggyback ECU = Icon Race or similar, takes signals from the engine management system, applies a map and then sends them onto the engine. Intercepts signals returning from the engine, removes the map and then sends them on. Some small gains possible, works by advancing the ignition timing to make better use of premium grade fuels. Correct map is ESSENTIAL, so factor in some RR time too for correct set up. Incorrect map (they tend to be sold with a 'generic' K series map) can be very costly in repairs.

Replacement ECU = Emerald / Gems or similar. Can be expensive for the gains they give, but once you get to a certain point in your other engine tuning, becomes essential as OE ECU can no longer cope. RR tuning should be part of the price - the only way to go if you want to go down this route.

Reprogram OE ECU = Not possible on early cars, later vehicles can have the maps altered or replaced by specialists. As far as i am aware, no map for the VVC or 160 spec cars exist outside of Emerald (things may have changed since i last looked at this in detail), 115, 120 and 135 maps are available. Do the same job as the piggy back ECUs, but are more comprehensive and tend to produce slightly more gains.

Average gain from chipping = circa +8bhp (all dependant on how good / well matched to your car the map is). There are cheaper ways of getting this kind of gain.

Don't waste your money ::)

The only way of gaining performance is to use a 3rd party ECU such as the Emerald unit but this will only really be usefull if the heads been ported and tweaked to allow it to breath easier.

Air Filter wise, go for an enclosed type such as the taipan/pipercross viper or itg maxogen annd duct the incoming air to the aide air intake.

Don't expect massive gains though although it may feel a bit more responsive..

You have to splash the cash to really get some large usefull gains !!

A-Ha!!....... Is it a Bird!?..... is it a Plane?........NO!!, its the `e-bay Resister of justice`, able to make people part with £20 for a useless 10 pence Maplins resister....... in a single bound!. :)

Look at this way if MG-R could have got `up to 20bhp gain`by fitting a 10 pence resister dont you think they would have done it!?!. :)

Even if the resistor trick worked its still would be a rip off, the true cost of the resisters used in this is 60p for a 100, that’s right 0.6p each.
