BAS do good quality replacment hoods, either standard plastic rear screen or an upgraded heated glass one.

If you have a hardtop go careful with the glass one as the hood will sit a touch higher, even more so if you have a dodgy springy frame, which can foul the hardtop.

Angela - Don't know where you are geographically, but I can only second what Colin and James have said above re BAS. They were an OEM supplier to MGR and also supply Jaguar and other leading marques. I opted for a direct replacement (ie plastic rear screen) and the quality and value for money was excellent.

Speaking of dodgy springy frames, I brought my old one home from work today, so hopefully I can strip that down over the next few weekends and transfer my BAS hood onto a non-springy frame which should mean it'll sit a bit lower :)

Hi Angela,

Be ware there could be much worst to come.

I brought my F 3 years ago, a 1999 V reg 1.8i from a garage, 1month out of the warrantee period my head gasket went, the cause some prat of a garage failed to reconnect the radiator fan after a repair form the previous owner.

The the EPAS went, I've still got that to repair or have an £800 steering column replacement.

Hole in the rear window caused by frost, make sure its warm before dropping the roof.

Clutch hyraulic pipe has now burst.

These F's cost a fortune but I'm not giving up on it. Its my baby now that the kids have grown up.

Sounds like your luck has been as good as mine Eric..... I have also had a new rear window owing to frost (at the beginning of the year!) - the last service that I had has recommended replacing the cooling pipes and, despite having all the seals replaced, I STILL have a soggy carpet and boot everytime that it rains... speaking of which, is it possible that I have a leak where the steering column comes into the car? as it does seem to be wet at the front of the car?

Despite all of this, the wind through my hair, and the "I like your cool car" comments, the way that it handles, and the uniqueness of the MGF all seem to make up for it (at the moment, will see if these feelings last through the winter....)

Sounds like the 'old favourite' heater box seal to me.

If you look at the windscreen, at the bottom of it, between it and the bonnet is a black plastic panel, with 2 grilles moulded into it - this is the scuttle. The grille on the passenger side is the main air intake for the heater system on the car and below it is the heater box, a black plastic box with a vent in each end. All it does is duct air from the grille, to a hole in the bulkhead and it is the seal here, between the box and the bulkhead that fails.

Problem
When it rains, water puddles under the bonnet on the heater seal, leaching past this into the cabin at high level inside the dash. From here is runs down the bulkhead, under the carpet and then soaks into the underlay causing dampness.

Cure
Open the bonnet
Undo the shroud panel (2x 10mm plastic bolts, 1x Philips head screw)

Unclip the underside of the panel from the 2 pins:

Remove panel:

To reveal the heater box:

Using a silicone sealant (bathroom stuff will do), preferably colour keyed or clear (don't want it to stand out), go over the foam seal underneath the box, sealing the joint as much as possible.

Replace shroud panel and fixings, then close bonnet - job done :)

Hi me again........

The leaks continue....

I have had a new hood fitted, new seals and still have leaks. I have yet to take the bit off under the bonnet which covers the heater thingy...... but guess that this will cure the front leak that I have. However, Ihave discovered ANOTHER one....... the parcel shelf behind the drivers seat was absolutley soaking... any ideas?

Also, I have to fill my water expansion tank up every 4 -6 weeks and as I have already had the head gasket done, am a little concerned about it...

Anyway, any help..........thanks

My dear Angela , I rather suspect that Scarlet Fever did that easy to follow step through for the front carpet leak for your benefit , not his.
Why not give it a go even six months later... That is a very worrying loss of water from your expansion bottle too, but it might possibly be your heater matrix leaking/as well, which would also give you wet carpets at the front and a slightly less serious reason for loss of coolant .
If you are'nt going to do any of the suggestions yourself, I really would take it to a proper MG specialist/garage soon. The parcel shelf dampness may well be a poor fitting of your new roof but you probably need a decent garage opinion. If you post your region on here somebody will advise you reccomended garages in that area.

I realise that Scarleet Fever did the easy follow step through for me, and I have every intention of performing this task, however, I have had a rather traumatic six months at home which has prevented me from doing anything on the car. Nevertheless, I appreciate the assistance that has been given so far.

I did wander if the new leak was caused by the replacement hood - I may give the company a call who fitted it for me.

The closes MG specialist to me I believe, is in Reading....... as my car is used daily it becomes a problem getting to work and stuff....... also, to be honest, am rapidly running out of money (and patience) on poor little pickle....

Thanks again guys

Hi Angela L, trust me, if you get the water loss sorted now, it could be a lot cheaper than leaving it, and causing a bigger bill later!

I had a suspect HGF on a non MG K seris engine, but I had it checked out, as I was losing coolant, I had caught it in time, before the coolant got in with the oil, meaning that more labour would be needed for cleaning everything out! The head also escaped the need for any skimming.

Seriously, I would get it checked sooner rather than leater. Maybe worth asking your regional rep on here, ih they, or any others can recommend anywhere - some places do courtesey cars which may help!!
